“I’ve always wanted to learn the drums.”
I hear it all the time. If you’ve found yourself on this page, you’ve probably said it yourself.
Luckily, drumming is a skill, just like any other. The more work you put into it, the better you can get. And just like any other skill, it benefits from having a teacher.
I’ve been playing the drums for over twenty years. As a student, I studied classical percussion with Allen Teel at Abilene Christian University, where I performed in the orchestra, marching band, and percussion ensemble. Additionally, I’ve played drums, piano, guitar, and bass in bands for my entire life.
In addition to teaching individual lessons for two years at Tulsa’s bART Conservatory of Music, I taught an after-school percussion class at Marshall Elementary for a year.
I teach rock drumming out of my home studio just off of 61st and Harvard in Tulsa. Depending on your location, I can also come to you!

When the school closed, I was really glad we could continue privately because I had already learned so much and genuinely looked forward to the lessons. He taught me drumming from the ground up: basic music theory, beats and rhythms, and eventually songs I actually wanted to play.
What I really appreciated was how creative he was in every lesson. He didn't just have me repeat the same exercises over and over. He encouraged me to use the whole drum kit and experiment with different sounds, including the rims and other parts of the kit. That made the lessons fun and kept things interesting.
Zack is also an amazing drummer himself. He plays in two bands and has a professionally released record, but the coolest thing was seeing him play live. I could recognize techniques and movements he had taught me in lessons, just taken to a completely different level in a real band setting. He's seriously a beast behind the kit.
He was always flexible with scheduling too, which I really appreciated. I had to stop lessons because I moved away, but I still have all my sheet music and try to practice at home. If you're thinking about starting drums, or you already play and want to improve, I'd definitely recommend Zack.”
